If your pet was sick, what would you do? And how far would you go? Those were the question we were faced with this past weekend.
Molly, our rescued 9.5 year old Rottweiler/Lab cross, was feeling under the weather on Saturday. She was in obvious pain and distress. She was panting hard, her stomach was hard as a rock, tender to the touch and she just couldn’t seem to get comfortable. She wouldn’t lie down, wouldn’t let us touch her, ran away from us and certainly wasn’t in the mood to eat – not even steak!
We didn’t know what was wrong – was she constipated? Had her stomach twisted? Was it something worse?
With tears in my eyes I kissed Molly and waved goodbye as Rob rushed her to the Emergency Vet Clinic. I thought that would be my last lick. I sat on pins and needles waiting for a phone call, news – any news on her. When he did call Rob told me that it didn’t look good – he wanted to know: How far should we go with this?
Molly is my best friend. We’ve spent many hours running together – she’s the most enthusiastic running partner you could ever ask for. For awhile I ran in the morning before work – she would jump on me and attack me with her giant, slobbery, tongue as soon as the alarm would go off. She was great for my leg turn over rate – she would pull me as hard and as fast as she could (and boy was she ever strong!). I ran a 4:06 marathon that fall.
She came camping with us, to the cottage with us and to the beach with us to fly kites. She even came to most of my softball games to cheer me on. No wonder they call dog a man’s best friend.
When Rob FINALLY came home he gave me the news:
Molly has a Tumour/Mass on her spleen that has now grown and is impinging on her stomach. Surgery is not an option. The vet had taken blood tests and xrays. 3 Vets reviewed the xrays and they all came to the same conclusion.
We gave her some pain killers vowing that we would watch her for a few days to see if her condition improved.
Sunday morning she was pretty much the same.
Then we fed her some sausages and hot dogs….
Sunday afternoon? You wouldn’t even know that Molly had been sick!
We had a BBQ and part way through I caught her table surfing – she had gotten herself a hamburger. We did a burger count and realized she was on her second one!
Molly is fine – I have no idea what the vet saw in those xrays, except maybe $$$ signs. Molly will live for quite a while longer to run with me and cheer me one at softball – Good golly miss molly! You had us all fooled!

Hi Janice,
Steve, the sentimental trade show guru
Wow, what a post. You had my heart aching (thinking about our cat who is getting old) as I read your post, thinking I would wish you the best, and then you pulled a happy ending out of your hat (at least for now). I hope Molly continues to do well.
I know eventually our cat will “move on”. I just hope it is out of the blue and in her sleep and we don’t face these decisions… that’s the way I hope to go to… in the distant, distant, way distant future.

I know exactly how that feels – our 9 year old boxer and greatest running companion was sick early this year too … we thought maybe the beginning of the end. But a million dollars later, she seems to be fine ….. and enjoying running with us as we train!
